The Reality of Growing Up: It’s Okay to Feel Stuck

“Growing up is losing some illusions, in order to acquire others.” ~ Virginia Woolf

Reality of Growing up

Growing up and becoming an adult is unexpected. It’s not just about bills and responsibilities, but also about quiet moments and odd experiences. You often wonder, “Is this it? Am I doing this right?”

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how growing up has not felt like one big transformation. People make it seem like because your age has increased, you’re automatically going to feel different. Like when it’s your birthday and someone asks you, “How does it feel to be 22?” you think to yourself, nothing’s really changed. I am still the same.

I’ve realized growing up feels more like shifts, tiny little shifts you make in your life and within yourself. The small decisions and times where you mess up and learn, even if it is the hard way.

Feeling Stuck is Normal

Sometimes I feel stuck. I remember after high school when everything was confusing and everyone had expectations of me. This made me feel overwhelmed, as if I was always disappointing others and myself. I didn’t let myself try new things or make mistakes because I thought everything had to be perfect. I was so focused on others’ opinions that I lost sight of who I wanted to be. It’s important to pause and ask, “What do I want?” Do something you enjoy. Step out of your comfort zone. Stop putting pressure on yourself. You’re not behind. You’re where you need to be.

I don’t have all the answers. Obviously, I’m only 22. Yet, I am learning that growth doesn’t have to look a certain way or resemble someone else’s journey. Sometimes it is just waking up and trying again. And being a little more patient and kinder to yourself than you were yesterday.

If you’re in a time of uncertainty, you’re not alone. You don’t need to have everything figured out to be making progress. If you feel comfortable, feel free to comment on your own experience of growing up or feeling stuck.

  1. You’ve got plenty of growing left to do. One piece of advice I have it to keep stacking positive change. Often, no need to tackle everything at once. Start building up wins and eventually you will look back at how far you have come. Things will begin to look clearer.

    1. Thank you for the advice I liked it. I’m going to try that. Sometimes I get overwhelmed with all the things I want to accomplish, but I’ll try to tackle one goal at a time! Thank you!
